A Message from the PMI Memphis Ambassador, Construction and Military Programs
Thank you for your interest in the Project Management Institute (PMI) Memphis Chapter’s Military Outreach program. A special “THANK YOU” to all of our service members and veterans. We understand, and appreciate, the sacrifices that military members and veterans make in service to our nation. PMI is committed to doing all we can to support and assist service members and veterans interested in the Project Management profession.
For this reason, the PMI Memphis Chapter has created a volunteer military liaison position. That role is focused solely on providing support, outreach, and other forms of assistance to military members and veterans who are Chapter members, considering becoming Chapter members, or joining the Project Management profession in general.
While the position is relatively new, we are working diligently to expand the scope of support we are able to provide.
As Director, Military Relations, on behalf of the PMI Memphis Chapter, I am honored to be your primary point of entry for questions, requests, and feedback for military and veteran programs. Many of the Chapter’s members have served. We have a diverse core of experience that can assist you in achieving your project management goals, whatever they may be.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me with your questions, requests, and especially your feedback on how we can improve our outreach services.
Again, thank you for your service. I am here to ensure your time and involvement with the PMI Memphis Chapter are both rewarding and fulfilling.
Together, we can!
Earnest L. Evans
Lieutenant Colonel, USA (Ret)

Do I have to have a certification, such as the CAPM or PMP to be a member of the Chapter, or attend Chapter events?
No. Anyone interested in Project Management who is a member of PMI can attend Chapter events. There are benefits to membership, however, as chapter members are eligible for discount pricing.
Does the Chapter provide assistance or training to help prepare for certification tests?
Yes. The Chapter hosts, or partners with outside institutions who host certification prep courses, boot camps or similar events to help individuals prepare to take certification tests. For more information related to educational or professional development opportunities, contact vp_membership@pmimemphis.org.
Can I get assistance with my application to test for a certification?
The Chapter does not currently have a program specifically designed to review certification applications, but there are individuals in the chapter willing to review applications and provide guidance on completing applications. Military members and Veterans can contact us.
Does the Chapter offer military discounts?
Active duty military and veterans are eligible to obtain their first year of Chapter membership for free, once they have joined PMI. Contact vp_membership@pmimemphis.org for more information.
Where can I get more information on certifications and testing?
PMI offers several different certifications. Visit the PMI website for more information.
Is any financial assistance available for Military/Veterans to help cover the cost of certification testing?
Yes! Service members and veterans may be able to use the GI Bill to obtain reimbursement for some or all of the cost of certification testing, through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Visit the VA website here, for more information:
https://www.va.gov/education/about-gi-bill-benefits/how-to-use-benefits/test-fees/
Additionally, some employers offer their employees educational / tuition assistance which may cover the cost of things like boot camps and certification testing, if the testing is related to an employee’s role or responsibilities.
How can I volunteer with the Chapter?
The heart of every PMI Chapter is its volunteers, and PMI Baltimore Chapter is no different. With a membership base of over 3500 individuals, the Chapter relies on its volunteers to organize and lead the Chapter, host events, and support all of the Chapter’s functions. If you would like to volunteer in some capacity with the Chapter – to include assisting our transitioning military members and veterans – visit PMI’s Volunteer Relationship Management System (VRMS) page:
https://vrms.pmi.org/OpportunitySearch/OpportunitySearch
From there, select “Baltimore, MD Chapter” from the drop-down list, and view the current volunteer opportunities.
