Doctoral Study - Best Project Management Practices and Future Categorization of Project Management Control Activities

January 13, 2021 Chapter Meeting, 6-7:30 PM - Register Now

Dr. Cheryln Conner recently completed the defense of her dissertation and was awarded her Doctorate. Prior to that, she invited PMI Memphis to participate in her dissertation study. The study had two primary stakeholder groups: (a) those with expertise in project management; and (b) strategy implementation. The problem that drove the research design and study was that project failure does not differentiate why it failed based on the type of project or the type of industry. To reduce failure rates and successfully deliver strategies in 2020 and beyond, this study gained consensus on industry best practices among a panel of project manager experts (PMEs) as to the future categorization of project management control activities to strengthen project planning and execution in project-based organizations (PBOs).

About Cheryln Conner:

Dr. Cherlyn Conner is not only the current VP of Professional Development, she also is an instructor with University of Phoenix. It was through University of Phoenix that she conducted her research study with the hope that the findings/results will be of benefit to project managers who lead complex projects for organizations that use projects to execute its strategies. Her dissertation was dedicated to her late mother who was both her biggest critic and biggest fan. Her mom's continued and consistent messaging to Cheryln was always to use the power of the pen and to employ persistence and determination until the job was done. Cherlyn has taken her mother's mantra as her own, “If it is to be, it is up to me.”

Cherlyn retired as a Senior Project Manager Advisor for FedEx Services after 24 years a little over a year ago. Her major responsibility was to collaboratively engage global cross-functional teams to integrate acquired companies into the FedEx family. This responsibility gave her the unique opportunity to travel the world and to spend extended stays in places that significantly influenced her growth as an individual and as a professional. She earned the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and certified as a Quality Expert. In January 2020, Dr. Conner began her service with PMI Memphis in the capacity of VP of Professional Development.

Dr. Conner's educational background includes a BS, Business Management, an MBA, Strategic Business Management, and her newly minted Doctorate. She wanted the doctoral degree because it supports her long-term plans for transitioning fully to the educational segment at the university level and exploiting her abilities to impact educational training for the 21st century workforce. She currently teaches/facilitates at the undergrad and graduate levels as a full professor. She desires to be positioned to provide more of a leadership role in the furthering of educational objectives. When Cherlyn joined the University of Phoenix faculty, she discovered the success of helping students learn concepts and theories and then translate these theories into practical application. She discovered her niche and her ‘real’ talent. Imagine being able to influence the thoughts of others!
