Cherlyn Conner, Auto-biography

I am a doctoral student with the University of Phoenix and in culminating my doctoral journey, I am aggressively finalizing my research study with the hope that the findings/results will be of benefit to us project managers that lead complex projects for organizations that use projects to execute its strategies. To this end, the study has two primary stakeholder groups: (a) those with expertise in project management; and (b) strategy implementation. The problem that drove the research design and study was that project failure does not differentiate why it failed based on the type of project or the type of industry. To reduce failure rates and successfully deliver strategies in 2020 and beyond, this study gained consensus on industry best practices among a panel of project manager experts (PMEs) as to the future categorization of project management control activities to strengthen project planning and execution in project-based organizations (PBOs). This dissertation is dedicated to my late mother who was both my biggest critic and my biggest fan. Her continued and consistent messaging to me was always to use the power of the pen and to employ persistence and determination until the job was done. I take her mantra as my own which is “If it is to be, it is up to me.”

To best understand how I got here, I retired as a Senior Project Manager Advisor for FedEx Services after 24 years a little over a year ago. My major responsibility was to collaboratively engage global cross-functional teams to integrate acquired companies into the FedEx family. This responsibility gave me the unique opportunity to travel the world and to spend extended stays in places that significantly influenced my growth as an individual and as a professional. I have the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and am certified as a Quality Expert.

My educational background includes a BS, Business Management, an MBA, Strategic Business Management, and “all but done,” with my doctorate pursuit. I want the doctoral degree because the timing is now. I am now in a position in my life that supports my long-term plans for transitioning fully to the educational segment at the university level and exploiting my abilities to impact educational training for the 21st century workforce. I currently teach/facilitate at the undergrad and graduate levels as a lead faculty but, I want to be keenly positioned to provide more of a leadership role in the furthering of educational objectives. The doctorate degree will allow me to do just that! When I joined the University of Phoenix faculty, I discovered the success of helping students learn concepts and theories and then translate these theories into practical application, I discovered my niche and my ‘real’ talent. Imagine being able to influence the thoughts of others!

I look forward to sharing my experiences and the outputs from the research with you!
