    Mayor, A C Wharton, will discuss the transformation that Memphis went through while he was mayor of Shelby county and Memphis. In addition to this he will also speak on it's future.

    Speaker's Biography

    A C Wharton, Jr., an attorney by profession, is the pricipal Lead in The A C Wharton Group, a consultant firm providing a broad array of strategic counseling to businesses, governments, not for-profits, and philanthropic organizations.

    He most recently served as mayor of the city of Memphis. Prior to that he served as mayor of Shelby County, Tennessee for approximately seven years. Attorney Wharton, a native of Lebanon, Tennessee, is an honor graduate of Tennessee State University and the Untiversity of Mississippi Law School. He also taught law at the University of Mississipi on an adjunct basis for twenty-five years. Among the courses he taught were Employment Law, Federal Procedure, and Legal Problems of the Indigent. 

    As County Mayor, Wharton reserved the County's failing finances, bringing its fund balance t approximately sevent-five million dollars and taking steps to stave off pension problems now faced by many governments. He undertook massive pension and healthcare reforms which have now stablized the city's finances with the city having a fund balance of roughly ninety-two million dollars at the end of his term. Under his tenure an unprecedented level of business relocation and core city economic development took place with over 1000 jobs being brought to the city during his terms in office.
