What you should know about PMI

March 2008

Dearest PMI Memphis Community:

Many thanks for your continued commitment to the PMI Memphis, TN Chapter and your dedication to the practice and growth of project, program and portfolio management.  Your accomplishments in 2007 built a platform to allow our chapter to reach goals not before imagined; our chapter continues to gain recognition through-out the Memphis area as the organization of choice for project management services.

The 2008 Board of Directors has worked diligently; the budget was approved in February along with several financial policies including a spending policy, refund policies for monthly meetings and PMP preparatory classes.  Chapter financials and policies will be posted to our new website which is planned for release late April 2008.

The new website will provide easier access to information about your chapter, job opportunities, networking sessions, training, meetings, links to relevant information and products.  Tyler Dacus, PMP your VP of Communications brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this endeavor and I know you will be pleased with the new look and feel you will find at www.pmimemphis.org

Chandy N. Littlejohn, PMP your VP of Education closed out the first PMP Preparatory class. Five additional classes are planned for April, May June, August and October, 2008.  Mid-year a PM Basics class will be released.  Gertrude Moeller PhD, PMP your Director of Academic Outreach continues to work closely with Christian Brothers University and the University of Memphis (U of M). The U of M has launched an undergraduate degree program in project management. Kudos to Gertrude and her team for their contributions of time and expertise in delivering the program.

Ed Nichols your VP of Programs has joined Chandy and Gertrude to bring what I expect to be one of the best monthly meetings in the history of PMI Memphis.  The May 6th meeting will be held at FedEx Institute of Technology and is sponsored by the U of M Management Information Systems department.  Mark you calendars and watch for details.  Don’t miss this meeting!

The PMI vision is that worldwide organizations will embrace and utilize project management and attribute their success to it.  Please let me know how I can assist you and your organizations to help ensure realization of our vision.

All the best,

Debra J. Arnett, PMP

President

Ten Ways to Earn PDUs

Every year, there are hundreds of opportunities to earn Professional Development Units (PDUs) as a part of the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. PMI uses PDUs to quantify approved learning and professional service activities for certified Project Management Professional (PMP®) and Program Management Professional (PgMP®) credential holders. And while taking courses and attending seminars are ideal ways to stay up-to-date with project management best practices, remember that many activities occurring in your daily professional life may count toward PDUs, too. Here are 10 ways to earn PDUs this year For additional information, click here.

Community News

Virtual Communities Project (VCP) Frequently Asked Question (FAQ)

The goal of the Virtual Communities Project, now in Phase 2, is to develop new and improved structural and operational models for SIGs and colleges. The revised structure will be better aligned with PMI's strategic objectives. Learn more about VCP here.

How Will Scope of a Community Be Determined?

The committee responsible for the community will set the priorities for knowledge and active community participation aligned to PMI’s strategic plan and the performance management framework. Knowledge delivery will be accomplished through the PMI infrastructure.

Additional services can be requested and built into the plan by the committee through processes set forth in the formation process currently under development.

Each community is expected to align with knowledge-based communities centered around A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)—Third Edition or other PMI standards; communities centered around various industry bases, such as IT Telecom; and communities that deal with topical areas of interest, such as Women in Project Management. The figure below illustrates the envisioned alignment of the different virtual communities.
